Alberta's Commitment

The Government of Alberta has made a commitment to the public by being environmentally responsible and increasing sustainability in their buildings. Over 70 buildings have been certified “environmentally friendly” by one of the leading environmental certification programs, BOMA BESt, with intentions of increasing that number in the near future.

The Government of Alberta is also committed to the LEED Silver environmental standard to promote more efficient designs with a strong focus on financial, social and environmental sustainability. LEED Silver is a certification level that has the potential of making a building up to 45% more efficient than the standard benchmark. This certification has been achieved by using a combination of wind energy and biomass. Purchasing directly from the grid has also been a contributing factor raising the amount of green electricity in buildings from 90% to 100%. Clean energy has decreased the government’s greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 220,000 tonnes annually.

The City of Calgary has recently achieved a noteworthy milestone by powering their entire C-Train system with wind power. Energy produced at a “wind farm” in Southern Alberta powers the train system that lowers the city’s CO2 emissions. Using electricity that is generated within the province, the City of Calgary ensures that there is as little energy loss as possible while it reaps the benefits of “zero emissions” public transportation with a renewable source of energy.
